Rings or Valves
What is the best way to find out if it is my rings that are bad or the valves are bad?

Ummmmm..... background check?
Seriously, what makes you think that EITHER is bad? Or, that one or the other MUST BE bad? Or, what are the symptoms?

Re: Rings or Valves
have you checked compression readings
are you burning oil?
if so at what times ? idle ? or higher rpm ?
are spark plugs oily on the tips and caked with burnt oil ?

I have not checked the comp readings yet but I am burning alot of oil at all times. The spark plugs also have oil caked on them. Sorry I didnt add some more info at the start.

Re: Rings or Valves
What happened when you just "shotgunned" the valve guide seals? As you already know from when you did it, that was cheap and quick ($30 and an afternoon, if you weren't in a hurry); did it help at all?

So do you think it is just my valve seals? Becuase the oil comes out at all times, the spark plugs have oil on them. The owner before me used nitrous on it more then just a few times so would that also lead to bad valves?

But I DO think it takes $30 and about 4 hours to change the valve guide seals, and I think it takes about $1500 and a couple of weeks to change the rings, along with everything else that gets disturbed in the process.
A compression test is not conclusive about oil consumption. Valve guide seals aren't involved in it at all, yet can pour unbelievable amounts of oil into the intake. Easiest way to figure out what it is, is to change something and see what happens.
Hmmm..... $30 & 4 hours, or $1500 and 3 weeks... whaddya think? Where to start?
