Look up EOIC. I just did that this afternoon, that'll work for ya.
If its tapping, you've probably wiped out your cam.
A 305 with 350 heads??

Try to reset the valves by the EOIC method. If you end up getting stuck where some of the valves won't move (stopping you from setting the one next to it), then you have wiped that lobe. And yea, that means you need a new cam.
But try setting it first, and go from there.

Slow down, you may not need a new cam yet. Besides, I can't possibly recommend a cam without knowing ANYTHING about your engine.
I'm hoping your engine came with the 3 mounting bolts for the 163 tooth flywheel? That wouldn't effect your cam timing, no.
Ok, a quick search showed me sofakingdom explaining EOIC;
"Use the EOIC method... adjust each cylinder's intake as its exhaust just begine to open (EO), and adjust the exhaust just as the intake is fully closed (IC). Much much better than that Chilton's method. THis method will actually get them close enough to where the motor will run halfway right."
Do that first. If you notice you're rotating the engine over for a very long time, and your #6 exhaust lets say, never moves, so you can't adjust your #6 intake, then yea, you've wiped the lobe off your #6 exhaust, and you need a new cam.
