suggestions?

new to this thread, i personally own a 4thgen but i figured you guys might be more help in this case,

gf is picking up her 1986 iroc z in about 12 hours exactly

so correct me if im wrong, I know its a v8 but since its 86 its most likely the 305 right? (since i forgot to mention, my 4th is a 3.8l so im not up to date on the older one's let alone the v8's) due to chevy only making 50 350 irocs in 86 ... again, correct me if im wrong

with that said, if im right on it having the 305, it has about 190hp right? well ive seen alot of performance parts for the 350 and so on, but what should i start off with on a stock 305?

point is, her birthday is coming up shortly and ive got about 900-1000 im willing to invest into this car, im looking to do some performance modifications but nothing that would require me to rip her engine out of the car, so where should i start with performance parts for this z28?

any tips and/or info would be welcomed for sure, always interested in learning about camaros, i just dont want to see a v8 have only 190hp, it seems a little low for a v8 imo

Re: suggestions?

get the heads ported then a good set of headers (Hooker 2055's).
If it is a carbed engine then a new intake would help alittle.

Or if you can get it for under $1,000 just go the Hooker 2055 headers and a aftermarket cat back exhaust, that will give a noticable power increase.

Re: suggestions?

rumor has it 50 were produced with a 350 in 86, but not released to the public.

so chances are its a 305.

There are 3 different 305 engines for that year.

LG4 Carb 160hp/250tq
L69 Carb High Output 190hp/240tq
LB9 TPI 190hp/285tq

sadly to say, the 86 iroc-z is considered the red headed step child of the iroc-z familiy, due to a cam change from 85 to 86 that resulted in less power.
However, any Iroc-Z is a good Iroc-Z imo. Better than rice.

as far as mods go, most will tell you not to mod a 305 at all, but I can tell you the 305 TPI engine can be a stout, fun car, especially equipped with a T5 transmission. If you want to do some cheap things to make the car go faster, i suggest porting and polishing the plenum/runners/intake manifold/throttle body as open as they can go, and also by running ducting from the fog light housing up to the air box where the TPI snorkel normally recieves air. You need to gut the bottom of the box so you can connect the ducting to that. This creates a ram air effect. There is an article on how to do all of that on this site. If it is the Carb'd motor then you'd better be served by someone other than me.

Re: suggestions?

well to clarify its not carbed, so it seems like intake/catback is the way to go. now for suggestions on brands, anyone have better luck specific brand catbacks or intakes? basically, which ones worth my money or is it not going to make to terribly much of a difference?

thanks again for all the help guys, youve been alot more help then the guys over at fullthrottlev6, they seem to complain more about me spending money on a car thats not mine than offering me advice on what to do with what im spending lol

btw venom, thats one nice ta youve got there, very clean

Re: suggestions?

Thx dude its my pride and joy and I got lots of plans for her.
All i know is the Hooker 2055s are ment to be the best headers for 3rd gens and as for catbacks I had a real good high flow 2.5" custom one made up ($650AUD/$550USD) and it was a huge improvement from stock if you go 3" it will be evan better.

Don't consider anything but 3". If TPI, stock is 2-3/4".

one looks pretty and will last forever =P

you need to coat your pipes somehow ... unless you want them to get all ugly and full of holes eventually

popular thing to do is buy uncoated and coat them using jethot. ends up being less expensive than ceramic.

Re: suggestions?

Sounds like a good price, what mufflers are they going to install?

EDIT: would a basicly stock 305 that dose not have power past 4,500K realy need that mutch flow of a 3" exhaust?

No, but we're building a foundation here, not the final product (I assume).

Re: suggestions?

yeah thats understandable, might aswell go more than youre engine NEEDS that way you got room to move when you do some more upgrades (Heads, Cam, Throttle Body and so on).

Looking at 85 to 86 stats id say the next step over the exhaust is a nice cam.
