Heater Core Hose Help

I am switching my 89 RS to Carb and am going to use the EDL-1405 Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb and the EDL-2604 Air gap manifold. (I read the tech section i know i need a regulator and distributior i am good with the rest) But where i have a heater hose entering the back of my manifold now there is no space in the air gap manifold, where do i route my hoses?

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

You use one of the coolant ports on the front of the intake in the water crossover passage (same passage that the thermostat sits in the middle of).

You can continue to run the factory return hose back up to the pass. side port on the radiator,

Every time I've done it I've ditched the factory coolant diverter valve assembly completely (just intake to heater core and factory return line back up to the radiator). Don't forget to plug the port in the factory coolant hard line running up the pass. side framerail if you do this.

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

I dont know if i understand

You mean go from the intake manifold straight to the return side of the heater core and a also a direct hose from the radiator to the send side of the heater core?? Can you straighten me out?

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

That's it; except, the connection at the manifold is the "send" side, it "sends" hot water to the heater; and the connection at the radiator is the "return" side, where the water coming back from the core goes into the cold side of the cooling system after it's been cooled in the heater. Very simple really.

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

And since i will go with that edelbrock air gap manifold and the send line coming out of the manifold is right next to the thermostat, then coolant will possibly always be running through the heater core, and since the send line is right next to the therostat like i said do you think it will make it hard and/or wont/ be really difficult for the engine to reach operating temp. (i have in a 160? thermostat) ???

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

No. All factory SBC cooling systems have used the heater core as a bypass since forever. Even the stock setup in your 3rd gen was "recirculating" coolant through the heater core (or bypassing the heater core but still recirculating it) at all times. Remember the return is dumping into the passenger side of the radiator (the side that's already 'cold') so none of that coolant is traveling through the part of the radiator that air flows through to cool it.

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

Thanks a great deal!

I am going with an edelbrock air gap manifold, Elelbrock 600 CFM carb, an Accel Stand alone HEI distributior and a barry grant 3 port fuel regulator, and proform 1.6 Full roller rockers.

In the conversion in an 89 RS 350 TBI to a carbed 350

Wish me luck!

Re: Heater Core Hose Help

frot of the intake is the smaller or 5/8" one

the larger one is on the radiator tank it is 3/4"

they are noticeably different size, and on the heater core too, you cant get it wrong

the waterpump one is the one that is used when there is no port on the rad tank

the valve in the heater core hose get rid of it yes

they are good for getting stuck, you have no real need for it, all it does is shut off flow completely to the heater core

most vehicles dont have one, mainly non a/c ones, but alot of a/c ones too, i always eliminate it

the vacuum hose to it just tuck it away somewhere out of the way or whatever you want to do with it

good luck
