Weird problem while setting timing....

Weird problem while setting timing....

I went out and bought an induction timing light and followed these instructions to set my timing:

I disconnected the wire coming out of the wire loom, the one with the gray connector after letting my car heat up to operating temp (160' for me). I hooked up the timing light and the timing was jumping all around while it was 'hunting' for idle, i saw that the timing was moving different ways as the rpms went up and down. I jumpered A to B on the diagnostics port under the dash and started the car back up and that did the trick, it was no longer retarding/advancing the timing. I set it to 6' advanced turned the car off and hooked everything back up and removed the wire.

Why would disconnecting that wire not work like it should?


This is the right wire, right?

I don't think the timing had ever been set in my car without the computer advancing it now that i think of it, because I remember it jumping around all the time from like 4' to 8' or something like that. and now it's way retarded at idle which it never was before, it was always set as close to 6' as the guy could get it. This very well could've been my overheating problem I think.

That ain't the right connector to take out the computer-supplied timing. Don't know what that connector is for sure, but it's not the timing connector.

The timing connector protrudes from the main wiring loom going over top of the heater box. It's is a weatherpack connector and the wire running through it is tan with a black stripe.

Jumpering the ALDL connector will accomplish basically the same thing (at least on an F-body) for your purposes, so I think you're good to go at this point even though you were unplugging the wrong connector.
