If you're putting a large coil-in-cap HEI in, it hooks up the same as the original, except the flat 4-wire connector that comes from the base of the original distributor and goes to the firewall harness won't be there on the vacuum/mechanical distributor.
You might be running out of fuel in 3rd.

make sure the fuel line isnt kinked by the fuel pump down there,
also make sure the filter int he front of the carb is not dirty, i never run that filtr in mine i always toss it and use an inline filter or no filter at all, never ever had any trouble with not using a filter actually
but if your lines are rusted inside anywhere then you will know it lol
i have just been lucky is all
the HEI you need will be the one with vaccuum advance and just three wires,
non computer controlled one
very common
most ppl have a few just laying around
sbc and bbc ones are the same
good luck

All you need for power is one wire that supplies 12 volts with the ignition key turned on. Make sure it's only hot with the ignition turned on. In other words, don't use a wire that gets power straight from the battery. Hook it to the BAT+ terminal on the HEI. The TACH- terminal is for your tach of course. Then just hook the vacuum advance hose to a vacuum port on the carb. You can use a port that has constant vacuum, or even better, use a ported vacuum source if you carb has one. A ported vaccum source only supplies vacuum after you open the throttle some. Since you don't need any vacuum advance at idle, it's better to use ported vacuum on most cars. Straight vacuum ports are usually located in the baseplate of the carb, whereas most ported ones are somewhere on the main body of the carb.
