Where to find a new, real Harrison AC compressor
Hello, it has been a long time.
I got a rebuilt compressor at PepBoys.
Cools wonderfully, but the freeking pulley wobbles.
The manager gave me 30 days to decide on another rebuilt, a new one [which I have since discovered is from China], or a refund. He will also refund the freon.
I really want a new OEM unit.
Any suggestions on where to find one, and at a decent price? Someone on ebay, with great feedback has R4 compressors. Many are OEM and unused, but he ignored my letter requesting information on availability of this item through his ebay store.
Thank you again,
Seth

Ok...I'll bite.
www.rockauto.com
SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # 0658941 $199.99
This lists as a new part. There are other Delco #'s and one may be new...but most are reman.
www.advanceautoparts.com shows a Ready-Aire compressor new for $220.
These came up when searching for a 91 camaro with a tpi 305.
I, personally, like the new parts when possible too.

To add to my previous post:
I think that getting a GM compressor would be too expensive to make it worthwhile. GM doesn't coat the inside with gold and use titanium bearings.
Frankly, I will be getting a new, aftermarket option. This applies to other parts too...the reman process usually screws something up. That is also why the aftermarket recognizes the need for NEW compressors.
Other parts that should be bought new whenever possible include:
Master cylinders (brake and clutch)
Alternators
Starters
Distributors
etc...

Re: Where to find a new, real Harrison AC compressor
I called ReadyAire, and they admitted, after much pushing, that they make their JUNK in China.
I just wrote a letter to RockAuto, requesting info on a new OEM unit. I ordered a computer from them last year. Sent it back, as it arrived DOA.
The dealer? Funny you should bring them up.
I got a price quote of $300 from them [Crystal Chevy in Brooklyn] for rear caliper rebuild kits. Then purchased the kits from GMPartsDirect for $30+ shipping.

Not if they come from China, such as (and not included to only) New A1 Cardone CV axles.
Personally i have my altenators and starters rebuilt by the local automotive electrical shop.

I want NOTHING from China.
They sell tainted shrimp, fish, toothpaste, dog/cat food ingredients, and make nothing but s**t.

I have had no problems buying from Rock Auto...and I tend to buy as many GM parts from them as I can.
However...
Most auto parts available under various brands after NOT made in the US. The question is...how much are you willing to spend.
Post back when you get a reply from Rock Auto...I am curious to see if some of those GM part #'s are new parts or reman stuff.

I will assuredly apprise you of their reply.
I would rather spend $300 on a GM product, than $200-300
on an import.
Don't get me started on China.
They have done a great job permitting us to ruin our domestic workforce.

I would tend to agree. Also the parts are cheaper in price...the quality suffers in general too.
The only other thing for me would be warranty return. I like the option of Advance because I have one only a few miles from me. It is a lot harder to do a warranty through an online retailer.

Re: Where to find a new, real Harrison AC compressor
I'd stay away from something thats been on the shelf a while, the front seal will leak on anything thats been sitting around too long. Having sold many compressors in the past, rebuilts are pretty much guaranteed to fail and the new units are pretty solid performers. I wasnt selling stuff when everything headed to China (was only a few things) so I dont know what their new units will do but if its like anything else we sold from there it was total garbage in a box.
Try contacting Four Seasons (division of Standard Motor Products) and see if they're still stateside or not. They used to sell both new and rebuilts.
As far as the Harrison, if its still available its going to come from AC Delco. They do sell those outside of the dealers, if its still available. I dont know. I can tell you for certain it will not match the OE compressor in appearance, the sticker is different and the color on the housing isnt the same. But, its a Harrison otherwise.

Re: Where to find a new, real Harrison AC compressor
Looked up Standard Motor Products. Didn't know that it is located right here in NYC.
They own Factory Air as well as Four Seasons. Both are in Texas, at same address. Their websites are duplicates of one another.
I already know that Factory Air is rebuilts and new units from China.
Back to the OEM thing.
Let's see what Rock Auto says.

I think that I am ready to make the purchase.
I found an online store called Bright Auto that has the new item [same Delco p/n] for $20 less than Rock auto, and same shipping by UPS is $5 cheaper.
Spoke to a lady, who had all the info at hand. Item is in stock in either pulley size.
Also, interestingly, Delco uses different p/n's for certain items, than were issued 25 years ago.
Anyone have opinions on Bright Auto vs Rock Auto?
I need to measure pulley size, so it is up in the air until I do that, and get your input.

When i worked at Oreilly Auto Parts I had a terrible time with Murray compressors. Murray is owned by Four Seasons. I would never ever buy a GM compressor from them.

Re: Where to find a new, real Harrison AC compressor
I know what you mean man. The quality just isnt there. I went through 3 GP -Sorrenson ignition modules, which are of course made in china. They cost about 40 dollars less then the delco unit, and come with a lifetime replacement policy... Which is why I bought them. I wasnt planning on using the policy so often!
The latest time one of those craptastic modules left me stranded on the side of the road I paid the extra money for a delco unit. Hopefully the quality is much better.
