VSS Help!

For about the past 2-3 months my speedometer has not been working correctly. Before I go any further, my car is a 92 RS/305/700R4. Back to the speedometer. It harly ever works right away. It will stay at 0 while im driving. Once in a while, while im on the highway usually, it will jump up to the speed I am going, but still wobble around + or - 5mph. 92s do not have speedometer cables, so that couldnt be the problem. I think the problem is either wiring, or the VSS, although I dont think the VSS could be broken, because the speedometer DOES work sometime. Just not too often. Everything else on the gauge works (other than the odometer, which is caused by the speedometer not working.) I ran a code test on it too and it threw a 24 (circuit fault to VSS). I REALLY would like to get this fixed, so if anyone has any experience with this problem, I would really appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

The good news is that you got a trouble code. That means the fault is between the transmission and the VSS module.

A poor connection at the VSS is one possibility. An intermittent circuit within the VSS is another.

First check the wiring to the VSS. A frayed wire is a good clue what you need to fix. A VSS is about $30-$75, so you wouldn't be out a king's ransom to just go buy one, install it, and see if the problem goes away.

So does this mean I can stop trying to trace wires from the gauge cluster to the firewall and whatnot? And how would I tell if there is a poor connection to the VSS? I know the VSS itself is on the transmition, but which side, or where, and what does it look like?

What im confused on is why it works sometimes, and other times it doesnt. The SES light isnt always on either. For instance, Ill be driving, and the speedomter wont work. Then the SES light will come on a bit later, the speedometer will start to work, then the SES light will go away. Or sometimes the needle will just jump up to the speed without the light having to come on.

I really need to get this fixed though because without the speedometer, the odometer wont work, and I need to keep track of my milage. Also, my girlfriend will be borrowing my camaro for a week or so, and she is deathly afraid of it in the first place, and even more so when she cant tell how fast shes going.

Thanks.

The VSS is on the driver's side of the transmission, toward the back end. It is held in place with one bolt on a tab and will have a connector with two wires going to it.

Intermittent operation of electrical components, especially those with a coil winding, are pretty common. Heat and vibration are the typical culprits. So are loose connections.

The problem still could be a poor connection under the dash.
