Ok i am looking to build a motor using the same specs as a 383 built in Chevy HI-PO. they use a Roller cam and lifters but they have a new block. my question is can i use the same cam and lifters. cam number is 12-419-8 and lifters are 850-16. i have a pre 87 block so this why i am confused. will it work?

 

You can use a roller cam and lifters in your block but you will need different lifters. You will need to get some retrofit roller lifters, they are more expensive. Heres a good article that explains everything you need to do.

You can use that cam, but not those lifters. Those are the factory roller type lifters for 87-up blocks.

You need part # 853-16 lifters instead.

You'll also need a cam button and a stiffer timing cover than your stock one; or, a timing cover with a built-in cam button, like this one.

 

Ok now the new question. Is there a NON- Roller cam that i can use that has the same profile as that one. I ahve been looking but can't seem to find a cam that is close to the same specs? any one help me?

 

You won't find a non-roller cam with the exact same profiles. The flat tappet cam needs to have longer, gentler ramps than the roller.

You DO of course realize that there's a REASON they used a roller cam. Right?

Speed costs money. How fast are you willing to spend?

 

Ya, roller cams reduces A LOT of resistance freeing up that horse power.

 

The advantage of the roller cam isn't from reduced friction (although it's nice that it's almost impossible to wipe them out), it's from the more aggressive profiles that are possible compared to the flat tappet.
