Re: engine problem HELP!!!!!!!

Too much cam, not enough motor, wrong carb.

Those cheeepie generic cams typically cause ALOT of trouble like this. Even when purchased in an Edelbrock box (which I hope you didn't.... that's the most expensive way to buy them). Besides not really running as good as modern ones; anything designed in, say, the last 40 years or so.

Try a Comp XE274 instead.

May also be installed wrong; a tooth retarded.

Check your ignition timing as well, BE SURE that you know FOR CERTAIN where TDC REALLY is. The blinky light is pretty much useless when the mark and TDC don't line up. For that matter, have you tried just advancing the distributor and seeing what happens?

Re: engine problem HELP!!!!!!!

Not really.

Same thing, just a smaller one. The next lobe down from the .510" one.

It would be "better" though, or at least "not as bad", in that it is a little closer to something you could run in a 350 without having to wind it up to 6000 RPM before it started making power. It'd only have to go to 4500 or so. Still a super crappy cam, though.

Buy a timing light. Put the weird clampy thing on your #1 plug wire and hook the red clamp on battery positive and the black clamp on battery negative. Disconnect the computer connector from the back of the distributer. Point the gun at your harmonic balancer and the scale on the timing cover. Sometimes its helpful to fill in the groove on the balancer with a bright paint. From there, every time the light blinks, #1 is firing. So when it blinks you see that groove in the balancer lined up with a value on the scale. This is actual timing. Now slowly turn the distributer and the mark changes its position. Research your base timing using the search button, I cant remember if you set it to 0 or 10 or in between that.

Okay, borrow a friggin timing light then chief. Good luck mate.

Re: engine problem HELP!!!!!!!

i am running the XE274 in my new 350 vortec with flat tops... and it is pretty mean for the price...and seems to be streetable even with 3.08 gears and stock manifolds...my long tubes didnt fit and i didnt have the patience after fighting it for 3 days by my self... but i like it once i get enough gas off idle it should be great
