which cam for my combo?

well the combo is in my sig below. which one of these cams would work the best? it is my dailey driver so i need some reliabilty. and depending on what cam you say, what would be a good stall for it? it is a street/strip car. ignore the cam in the sig, that is what i have now but i want to upgrade.

The link doesn't work. List the Summit p/n's so we can look them up and compare them.

When are you planning on getting a real carb?

Definitely not the Dual Energy cam. Your heads are too good for that.

The Magnum cams tend to have more peak power. The XE cam you listed is pretty small for your heads. Something like an XE284 would be more like it, CCA-12-250-3.

The Crower doesn't look too bad, but I'm not that familiar with their products.

I would say about 3500 stall, and get yourself a 750 DP Holley.

I know you say this is your daily driver, but your heads really need a cam that will let them work.

Re: which cam for my combo?

definately a 750 carb for those heads. those are good heads and want a bigger cam.

3000-3500 stall would be great. for more driver i'd stick with a 3000-3200. more race, i'd go 3500-3600.

Cam i'd like that XE 284, but its kinda big for a driver car i'd say. the XE274 cam would be nice too

Re: which cam for my combo?

What do you use the car for? Do you plan on changing the converter? If not I wouldn't go to big. The car will leave like a dog.
I'd recommend an Comp XE268H or a Lunati VooDoo 60103 if you're going to run a stock converter. Lot's of SBC engine builds use the XE268H cam with good results. 1.6Rockers would help as well.
With more converter I go up a size on cam. XE274H or Lun 60104.
Also you might check out TFS's own cam recommendations. They have a package with your heads and a K31401001 cam 228/234 w/.490/.494"lift. TFS say 420hp/395torque w/Vic Jr. Should make just as much/more HP and more torque with your RPM intake.
Also, I agree with the guys above. I'd replace that AFB with a 650 Demon or a 650HP. But that's just me.

Re: which cam for my combo?

GM high tech did a test on the TFS 445hp package on a 350. Trick flow says 445hp with their 195cc non cnc heads and big 24x/25x hydraulic roller cam.

GM high tech made 503 hp i think it was at 6100 rpms but it probly got valve float and could have pulled higher. i'd expect that cam to pull to 7000 in a 350.

Just saying this because their other packages could be underated

I was going to do a XS274 (solid lifter version of the XE274) in my 396. I was talked into going one bigger by the people on this board. It isn't my daily, but it drives on streets and roads just fine, actually better on the highway than the 270 hydraulic it replaced. I realize a 396 is bigger than a 350, but don't forget the BBC cams are typically designed around 454's, so in a 396 it's more radical than it would be in a 454. SBC cams are typically designed around 350's, unless otherwise stated, so I don't think the XE284 would be too much. If anything, the heads already are too much, so undercamming it would only make it worse.

Re: which cam for my combo?

I agree with the guys above. I run the Xe284H-10 in my 400. Its a good cam for a S/S car. Makes lots of power. Works just fine with a RPM or Vic JR manifold (your choice) Needs a 3500rpm stall. Needs a 750cfm carb. Needs a modified ignition advance curve. Burp the wallet and get a good "lockup" high stall converter like sold by Precision Industries (Vigilante) or from Yank. "S/S 3600". Both these converters cost a little more but deliver as advertized and retain the lock up clutch. Do not buy a restalled cheapy 12" converter.

Re: which cam for my combo?

then dont go 284 cam. go with the next size down, the 274H or the 268H or one of the XFI flat tappet cams, like the 268 i think. they are big lift and split duration but on a friendly 113 lsa

Re: which cam for my combo?

That would work pretty well, but it's on the big side for a daily driver. Your call. You'll want a 3000RPM stall, or a bit bigger.

You pretty much set the table with your choice of heads. These aren't bad heads, understand, but they are "aggressive" heads.

For the record, it was F-BIRD'88 who recommended I go bigger with the cam when I was looking, and he was right. He's saying you should go with the XE284, and I recommend you trust him.

Re: which cam for my combo?

You're running that cam now... What do YOU think?
It's not "wrong", it's just not ideal. As mentioned, you're leaving power on the table.

Re: which cam for my combo?

I would install the heads with the cam you have now and try it.
I would get the high stall converter. If you want to go drag racing and have a hard launch buy a 3500 stall "lock up" converter reguardless of if you keep the cam you have now or go up in size. The XE284H will definatly want the 3500stall. It will make more power than the cam you ave now. Its more radical than the cam you have now but still streetable once the ignition curve is dialed in. If you want gas mileage, keep the cam you have now, install the heads, get the 3500 "lock up" converter and improve the exhaust system. If you can live with a slight loss of fuel mileage then spring for the new larger cam.
the xe284 needs a free flowing exhaust system to work (or uncap the headers at the track.). It's all about airflow.

Re: which cam for my combo?

i just read that i could use a converter out of an s-10. the stall is 2000-2200, would this be a direct replacement and if so would it be any good?

Re: which cam for my combo?

yeah you can use that 2200 stall converter but it wont be as good as a proper 9-10 inch aftermarket unit built for the motor specs. larger cam will want more stall anyway but definately any step over stock is appreciated

Check out bowtieoverdrives.com. You can get a converter from them that's 2600, 2800, 3000, or 3200 stall for $570. Or, 2400 stall for $270. With those available, it doesn't make sense to go with an S10 converter.

Once you get used to driving a higher stall converter (which doesn't take long), you'll wonder why you ever waited to get it.

And, when you "settle" for less stall than your cam really wants (and I'm talking well above the low end of the advertised cam "power band"), you'll just kick yourself over and over and over.
