engine wash fluid?

So I'm looking to doing a little tune up to my car soon, and I was at autozone getting some injector cleaner when I saw a bottle of engine sludge remover? Claims to get rid of engine sludge in a matter of minutes? Any info on this?

Re: engine wash fluid?

I have not heard of it but if it was my car I would not put anything like it in my engine. 40 years ago, we used to drain the oil in old cars with engine sludge and fill the engine up with diesel fuel, let it soak overnight. It worked pretty good unless you started the car then you washed out the rings. Kiss one engine goodbye. You should be ok if you use good quality oil and filters and keep your temps down and air filter clean. I usually get 150k + miles on small block Chevys without any additives to the engine oil before they need any major engine work.

Re: engine wash fluid?

Not worth it.

Add a quart of diesel fuel and run the engine for 15 minutes or so, then change the oil; or, add a quart of ATF, and change it after a couple hundred miles or sooner if it gets to where it looks like it needs it. You can use the ATF trick a few times if necessary to dissolve all the old grunge out of it.
