oil rail gap?

So I know my paper that came with my file fit rings says .015 minimum, and me being dumb, like the compression rings I thought this ment .015 X bore. so of coarse, I took my first oil ring and gapped it to .060 and now I think I realize that the .015 minimum is for of coarse the 4" bore. and right around .055-.065 is maximum that you should go. SO I think I should order one more oil ring. But my question is. What kind of gap should I run on my oil rings? Should I just leave them at the .015 or so? or is their some benefit to a greater gap?

Re: oil rail gap?

only rings i ever had to fit were the top two not the oil rings. good luck on buying one oil ring. good rule of thumb is .0045 per inch of bore, but you should follow what each ring maker says and you need to consider if the pistons are hypers or not.

The benefit of a greater gap is increased oil consumption.

Re: oil rail gap?

That's what I was thinking, only oil consumption. The oil ring doesn't grow a whole lot, it stays cooler than the rest.
And yea, I didn't think you file fit those, I thought you just leave the oil rings?

What are you doing for the top two rings, the ones that really do matter?

Your machinist might happen to have an oil ring laying around you could use. Otherwise you're looking at buying a cheaper set of rings and taking just one oil ring set out...

Re: oil rail gap?

Thanks guys, I will try to buy just one oil ring lol. I already took care of the compression rings, they are gapped quite well
