poor fuel economy and performance

I've got a few problems with my 83 T/A 305 LG4 Auto (700R4)
It is looked after and serviced, although it needs some new plugs as the ones in there have been in there about a year. Although they have only got about 1000 miles on them, i do mainly short journeys.

i went to a show in april 06 (about 200 miles away) and noticed i only got 16mpg on the hiway with a 70mph constant speed, as i had just recently serviced the car (which included a 180 stat and O2 sensor) i put it down to the fact that i hadn't done the timing.
after this i decided to advance the timing for a little more power and i noticed it was on the factory 6 degrees. i put it up to 10.

i decided to time my 0-60 time today and got 14 seconds, my mate who was with me reckoned i lost 3 seconds, due to wheel spin at the start. so that makes 11 seconds, and i believe the time for a factory 83 is about 9 seconds ish.
there are no obvious driving problems with the car, no codes, and the transmission shifts fine.
oh yes, only other mods are a camaro duel shorkel air cleaner (with k and n filter) and a high power ignition coil.
i have done a quick search and as there are no codes and the engine sounds good, i'm thinking maybe: Coolent sensor on its way out, leaky casting plugs in the carb, choke problem, or blocked cat? i plan to re-build the carb soon as i want to learn how, so that will probably fix the problem (i hope) but i would prefer to know the achual cause first.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

Re: poor fuel economy and performance

Today i noticed a strong petrol smell when starting the car, it has done it since i got it, but for some reason i never really noticed enough before. so i am obviously running rich which explains the reduced gas milege, i assume this is causing my loss of performance as well?
so as it is cold and not warmed up, i assume that is a carb / choke problem? the smell seems to go away when it is warmed up.
