Gas Problem

Okay, heres the problem. After I bought the car, I took it to go fill up with gas. I noticed the little flapper valve that the gas nozzle goes into is stuck open like the spring is worn out. I filled up and drove around for a while, and got out, and there was a big gas stain all down the side of my car and I know I didnt spill any. I went to pepboys and got a new stant gas cap for my car, figuring it has a rubber seal that should keep the tank from leaking.

Every time I have filled up, it always leaks out. I think it happens most when I park the car at night, I back downhill into my driveway. The other day I backed down my driveway after filling up, and it must have leaked a gallon on the asphalt there was a huge stain on the driveway the next morning. Also, every time I open the gas cap, a ton of pressure hisses out. Is that normal on these cars? My last car never had gas tank pressure.

Right now, I am trying to stay below 1/2 tank, and it seems not to be spilling out. My clearcoat is like permanently ruined under and behind the gas door.

Re: Gas Problem

okay that contradicts its self... how the hell do you have pressure building in the tank... which is normal and should happen and yet have fuel leaking from the filler neck?

Re: Gas Problem

So its normal for the gas cap to release pressure when you open it? This is the first car I have seen that on ever. Maybe its an old car thing?

The only other thing I can think of, is that maybe Fbody gas tanks sit high enough that when I back down the hill, the filler neck is below the fuel level?

Re: Gas Problem

it is supposed to hold pressure to reduce emmissions evap gas is the same as unburnt through the engine
