Flex plate is bashing my torque converter!?

ok, as above my flex plate is bashing my torque converter when the engine is running and i dont know why. Its a 79 350 with a TH-350 Trans. I did not put the engine or trans in the car so i have no idea whats stock or not. The engine has solid motor mounts and a stock starter. This noise just recently started and the only thing i could think of is a cracked flex plate or maybe the solid mounts vibrated some bolts and nuts loose on the trans or something? ANY IDEAS Please Help?

A cracked flexplate is more common than you may realize. First, check to make sure that all of your bolt/nut sets are nice and tight. If you do have a crack there doesn't have to be a problem other than worn out parts.

Replace it.

Re: Flex plate is bashing my torque converter!?

I now checked the flex plate and there seem to be no cracks. So i tightened all of the screws from the Flex plate to the TC. The flex plate is not flexing very badly anymore however my TC is what seems to be wobbling around now. but when i check the TC when to engine is not running, everything seems tight and in place.... i have no idea whats going on.

Check the bellhousing to engine bolt torque and verify that the upper 2 bolts are actually there.
Some people leave them out because they are hard to get to.
Also when the flexplate cracks, it's around the crankshaft bolts. Very hard (impossible) to see with the trans in place.
I would be suspicious if someone else put the '79 engine in it.
Cracked/broken flex plate sounds like THIS.

Re: Flex plate is bashing my torque converter!?

well im glad to say that it doesn't sound like that. Its more like a knock then a chatter or scrape. I can also see the torque converter kinda wobble into the flex plate and knock.
