The main thing that needs "breaking in" is cam & lifters with flat-tappets. Rollers no problem.

Can't say I have a lot of respect for the brand, but probably best to use petroleum-based oil for the initial run, drain it, put petroleum-based back in for a few hundred miles, then switch to synthetic.

Re: synthetic oil ok to use in a rebuild engine

Im really on the fence on this one. I've built dozens of engines and never had a problem. Til the last one. I put a full synthetic in for the start up. This motor has used oil since day one. Fouls plugs on 2 5 & 7. The machine shop said it was probably due to the synthetic during break in. I don't really see it but I'm tearing the motor down this week after only 25k. I'll know if something else is wrong then. I'm planning NOT to use synthetic this time. Maybe just and "old mechanics tale" but why take the chance. Besides, I plan on changing the breaking oil after only a few hundred miles so the added cost isn't worth it. Just one man's opinion...

or you could drain it, there's a special thing that allows you to do that, and refil it with differant oil

Mobil says on their site that synthetic is OK for for engine break-in. They have a list of cars that roll out of the factory with synthetic oil in the crankcase.

It's a source of debate.
Personally I use 30W dino juice for break-in.

Re: synthetic oil ok to use in a rebuild engine

If I was you, I'd check with the ring manufacturer and see what they recomend. Total Seal says they don't recommend synthetic for break-in. Other mfgs may agree or not. Why take the chance? Dino oil won't hurt anything and its got to be changed soon anyway. All the synthetic oil companys say it doesn't hurt to change from dino to synthetic.

Go for mineral oil, Some might say syntetic is ok for brake inn but no one tells you stay away from mineral oil! And dont go for the cheapest one, you get what you pay for.

NO! I'm glad you drained it, your rings will never seat if you startup with synthetic!

Re: synthetic oil ok to use in a rebuild engine

Just a follow up to my earlier post. I used synthetic oil during break in and this motor used a quart every 800 miles or so from day 1. I disassembled my engine the other night and there are no signs of any problems except that the rings just didn't seat. The cross hatch from honing is still there after 24K miles! It's odd too that the rings aren't shiny on the face like you'd normally find on used rings. The worst part is that I really knew better... but I reasoned that since there are engines shipped from the factory with synthetic so it should be ok- right? If it's good enough for a Corvette it's good enough for my IROC! Well I can't say for sure that the synthetic oil kept my rings from seating but I've never had this problem before. I will never again use synthetic during break in. But I probably will after about 1k miles so I can use a low weight oil (5-30w) to reduce the oiling system's parasitic drag. (almost free HP!) If synthetic DID cause the rings not to seat then this proves how good synthetic is when it comes to lubrication. It's just too slick for break in. Kinda makes me wonder what GM does to make it work for the Vette.
