Gear puller questions!
Bought a gear puller so I can take my crank timing gear off, It didnt come with directions, so I used it, I got the gear to the edge and I realized it was stripping the balancer threads, and It would come off an more. Did I get the wrong puller? what should I do now? Im kind of pissed and want the motor in the car by september.

Re: Gear puller questions!
Do you have a pic of the puller u used?

This is one simular to what i use. I welded an old socket on the end of it so it dosent go into the crank.

Re: Gear puller questions!
I screw a short bolt into the crank to give the puller screw something to press against.

Must not have been the right size or thread, or not screwed in all the way....
If the threads are farkled, it's Heli-Coil time.

Yes, that works well; heat it GENTLY, just until a bit of oil on it starts to smoke. No hotter than 400° or so. Then tap it on if necesary with a brass drift.

Re: Gear puller questions!
I assume we are talking about a SBC...
Of the couple I've done they all went on without heating them. I just gently tapped them on with a small hammer around the whole gear. Comp also makes a better tool for installation that uses a stud in the end of the crank, and uses a nut to pull up on a spacer to push the crank gear on.
