Help with Idle issues
My car has been giving me problems for some time now. I work a lot of OT during the summer and I finally got my car put back together. I had an issue where my Z would hardly idle. I removed the injectors from the intake. I charged the fuel rail and I noticed three injectors were leaking. So, I purchased new injectors off of ebay. They did not leak. I also noticed the headers were cracked at the tiny air lines on the top of the header that go to the smog pump. I welded them. I pulled my heads off and had them gone through from the local machine shop. I finally put everything back together. My car does not want to idle unless I bump up my timing to 15deg advced. I have NO CODES. It does not sound right and seems to surge and shake then it somewhat smoothes out. Now, if I open the throttle, the car will not increase the rpms unless I find a sweet spot in the position of the throttle which is about 1/2 throttle. It only gets to about 3500rpms. I've no idea how to chase this gremlin. I have replaced my map sensor, checked my tps which is fine. I replaced my O2 sensor, fuel injectors, plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor and coil.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Help with Idle issues
I replaced my ignition module too! My plugs are BLACK and I have a wet non fuel smelling black fluid comming out my exhaust. If I put my hand about 1 foot behind the exhaust pipe, I get tiny splatters of the stuff. I did have some serious fuel injector leakage as my fuel psi would drop from 43 to 0 in a matter of 2 minutes with the old injectors. My new injectors hold 40psi for 15 minutes before the pressure drops off.

Re: Help with Idle issues
Put a timing light on it and make sure you are getting advance. from the black spatters and rough running it sounds like the timing is very retarded. My guess would be that something in the ignition has a bad connection or bad ground.

Raiden
Start with basics:
Reset and clean IAC. See https://www.thirdgen.org/tpimod2
Check fuel pressure (what year is your TPI) should be 42 to 48 psi and steady.
Check for vacuum leaks in all the usual places.
Check your EGR - make sure that is not stuck open - that will screw idle up.
Check ignition coil and spark quality. You can get a an in-line tester. A failing ignition coil may cause misfire at higher RPMS.
Check supply voltage to the coil (must be better than 13.2 Volts when idling)
Check dizzy cap for carbon buildup and cross fire.
Re-verify dizzy #1 cylinder post vs. #1 cyl at TDC vs. timing mark.
Get ALDL cable and WinALDL and get some data logs.
I hope this helps

Re: Help with Idle issues
Well,
When it rains it pours, especially here in Seattle! I pulled out my old lap top and what do ya know, it's TU! I purchased some ford svo injectors and there is a mild difference between my old one's and the new ones. The new injectors do not have the recessed groves for the keepers to hold the injectors in the fuel rail. I had a few issues with fuel spilling out and I think I have a vacume leak where the injectors mate with the intake. I don't hear a hiss and no noticible change in my rpm's when I spray carb cleaner on the suspected areas...but then, I"M GETTING A WHOPPING 5 inches of vacume!!!! I just said skrew it, and purchased some new accell 36lb injectors from summit. I hope this is the problem, but i've no idea of why I"m only getting 5 inches of vacume. I lashed my valves hot and put 1/2 turn past zero. Any ideas? No codes either

Re: Help with Idle issues
thats no good.
im having some idleing problems as well.
i also live on the west area. (vancouver island)
and yes when it rains it pours. and stays lol. so it sucks working on your car with out a garage
with my car. it idles ok. then goes down to like. 400rpm and back to around 1000 for abit and then goes to about 800 or 900 and stays at that normal rpm. and when you wanna drive it.
step on the gas. and it just like dies. no guts. it spudders and boggs out until you get about 3500 - 4000 rmp. then you start picking up speed then go into 2nd. start alllll over again.
are you having the same problem as well? have you tryed driving it?

Hmmm sounds like your 'kitty' had too much. How did you determined that you have a plugged up CAT? (removing is the most obvious)

Re: Help with Idle issues
Well, after a ton of frustration, I started to look at the problems I found. 3 leaking fuel injectors. I run my tune rich via FMU with my supercharger. I dropped my exahust from the header collector and it idled perfect! At that point, I KNEW what was up! Cut my cats off and I could not even see through them. I never had a cat plug so quickly as mine did! I gutted them, put a piece of pipe in the cat and welded them back up.
RF, Thank you for your help! AND everyone else!!!!!!!!!!
