speedo cable fixed still no reading

Hey folks, I used to suffer from a clicking on the highway according to my rpm. I read up some previous posts, and just like I thought, it was the speedo cable. So I changed the speedo cable and when I drive there still is no reading. So I went down to check out my mechanical speed sensor on my trans. Hooked it up to a drill to test it, and gave me a reading. Yet when I drive it still does not. I did lubricate it with what came in the box from the store.

These are my assumptions:
1) maybe there isn't enough trans fluid for the gear to spin? but that's hard to believe
2) The factory speed cable, its tip that hooks up to the gauge is made of plastic, the new one is pure metal.

Can anyone please help me out? It's killing my mpg on my tpi.

Oh yeah, there's no more clicking in case you wondered.

If the drive or driven gear in the tranny is broken, the cable might not spin.

How can I check if it broken? Would I have to remove the tail housing of the tranny?

No, remove the cable from the tranny. One smallish bolt holds the sleeve and driven gear in place. Once you've wiggled the sleeve free, the driven gear will be exposed. You should be able to see the drive gear through the hole. Hopefully, you'll be able to see enough to come to a conclusion. Here's a link that might prove useful:

Re: speedo cable fixed still no reading

JamesC,

I pulled out the mech speedo sleeve with the driven gear. I was looking for the "drive" gear thru the hole. With a light, but I couldn't see it. I've installed a new cable, tested it with a drill attached to the cable end and got a reading on my speedo. While I drive I don't get a reading. I think its the "drive gear". So much work now to remove the drive gear. Do you have a part number for the drive gear?

I have a 3.23 rear and a 91t5 trans

Re: speedo cable fixed still no reading

3.23's up require a blue 7-tooth drive gear, plus the following driven gear: 18 tooth (p/n 3987918) Brown.
