engine build up!

i have a 305 i want to build for my 85 camaro im going to run a q-jet setup on top.was wondering what a good lower end, cam, and heads setup would be to go with shorty headers.its a 2 bolt block with studs for the mains not bolts.I thought about going .30 to .60 but im lost from there.i built the stock 305 in car but its only 155hp but i want more.any thought on any combos are good im open to all suggestions.

Re: engine build up!

Any reason why you want to stick with a 305? If you've got it torn down to the bare block ready to bore it out, it's only a few bucks more to grab a 350 block and go from there. It's the cheapest 50HP you'll ever buy, and it's super easy at that stage.

How much you bore it out, .030 out to .060" isn't a performance modification, you're gaining 5-10 cubes, which is diddly when it comes to performance. You only want to bore it as much as you absolutely have to, just to clean up the walls.

1968-1985

This engine would be EXCELLENT for just about any street car, pickup truck, 4X4, and some marine applications (call or email us for details). With 316HP @ 5000rpm and 390ft lbs of torque @ 3750rpm it still has a smooth idle, good low end and midrange power, and works well with either a manual or automatic transmission. The included intake manifold comes with 2 bolt patterns to run either a Holley 650 carb or equivalent Quadrajet carb (carb not included). This engine will run on leaded or unleaded pump fuel.
The balanced rotating assembly (typically includes crankshaft, pistons, rings, connecting rods, rod bearings, and balancer) featured in this engine:
  • 3.484" stroke nodular iron crank
  • 5.7" forged rods with ARP rod bolts
  • 9 to 1 compression flat top pistons
More special features of this engine include:
  • New Hydraulic flat tappet cam with .472" valve lift
  • 76cc heads with 1.940"Int/1.500"Exh valves and 1.250" high performance springs setup to match cam
  • New High temperature valve seals
  • New Spiral-type valve guides
  • New 1.6 steel rocker arms with ***** and nuts
  • New Hardened push rods
  • New Perfect Circle rings
  • New Double row timing set
  • New High volume oil pump with welded big pickup screen and steel drive shaft and steel guide
  • New Revolutionary 1-pc design molded rubber oil pan gasket with load limiters to prevent over-tightening and higher temperature resistance than standard cork-rubber gaskets
  • New Brass expansion plugs
  • All parts are painted separately before assembly for that show quality look
This engine comes completely assembled with oil pan, driver side chrome dipstick and tube, timing cover, harmonic balancer, chrome valve covers, and an Edelbrock Dual Plane Performer aluminum intake manifold.

This engine is covered by a 12 month, 12,000 mile written warranty.
(There is no warranty when using a Blower, Turbo, Super Charger or NOS)
