Any tips changing a PS pump shaft seal?

Any tips changing a PS pump shaft seal?

Mine is leaking out the front shaft but the pump is still good. I keep it full of fluid and it don't go empty very quick 2-3 days of sitting or driving per fill up.

Am I just whistlin dixy here thinking I can save loot just changing the seal or is a new pump the best way?

Be awesome if it was an easy still on the car job.

Sure Im gonna have a fit with themPS lines let alone pulling the PS pulley off the shaft. Which I assume you gotta do either way even with a new one.

Don't see any obvious way of removing PS pully either.

You can rent the pulley puller & installer from AutoZone for free.
A line wrench is handy for removing the pressure line as people tend to overtighten it not knowing how the seal on the line works.
I would replace the pump. They're not that expensive and to just change the seal you have to do more work. If the shaft/bearing is worn (common) the new seal won't hold for long.

Re: Any tips changing a PS pump shaft seal?

Have you done this before?

Looking up parts you can get the pump alone or the pump and resivor as one unit.

Hard to see but do the lines screw into the resivor or pump???

Also seen they have complete rebuild kits for the pump $15, has all kinda of parts in it.

Could probably make a few buck on the deal then. I could take it all apart n powder coat it all nice n hock it off needing the $15 rebuild kit installed.

Most remanufactured pumps do not come with a new pulley. You have to swap your old one over to the new pump.
Might as well just put a new seal in your old pump.

I've done both repair and replacement enough on V8's. The V6 should be similar.
I leave the lines on the pump and pulled bracket and all. Disconnect the high pressure hose from the steering unit and the low pressure hose from the tube coming from the front of the frame.
I guess it depends on how young you are and how much money means to ya whether you just change the seal.
Reman pump is $38. after core. For 2 stinkin' dollars more you can get it with reservoir.
The repair kit does not come with the shaft or bushing that wear. By the time the seal leaks they're usually worn out.
The pulley is a bitch to get on and off and you have to do that whether you repair or replace the pump.
If you just change the seal, also buy something to throw when it leaks again in 6 months...
p.s. an impact wrench and grease makes pulling and installing the pulley much easier than wrenches and sockets.
