valve train noise???!!!

I have been having a problem that has me totally boggled. If I set the timing at 6* like it should be, I seem to get engine rattle under load especially when the pedal is to the floor and warmed up. If I set the timing at 0* the car runs fine but the noise seems to be gone. I am getting ready to do heads and cam but want to figure this out first. The car runs great and I only use high octane gas. Almost sounds like a can full of bb's at hard throttle under heavy load. until timing is backed off. The engine makes no noise otherwise even at idle. (no knocks or ticking) Check my sig for mods.

they said to keep it at stock setting. It almost seems like it is too far advanced with the noise. I would almost assume timing because noise clears up when retarded.

Re: valve train noise???!!!

typically when you order a piece from a place like PCM for less... you get less WAY less... than you had hoped. basically all they really can do is throw more timing and more fuel at it... so you see the problem... the fix is pull timing until you dont have any more knock... your "performance" will suffer a bit... but then again your engine wont... that $250 could have been better spent on the required hardware to tune your own chips... as by pulling timing to save your engine you have basically undid all of their perfomance enhancments

Re: valve train noise???!!!

So thinking that is probably what it is? Would it be better to wait until the other work is done and maybe have it dyno tuned? Or should I get the hardware and tune it myself. Is it hard to tune with the hardware?

Re: valve train noise???!!!

well what other work are you planning?

i personally couldnt tell YOU if YOU would find it difficult to tune this engine as i havent a clue as to your personal skill set... however given some time and patience... and reading. i am sure you could get it to run decent maybe even pretty damn good...

you could PAY$$$$ to have it dyno tuned... but then you would be out more $$$$ than necessary and wouldnt have learned to do it your self so you could handle the future mods to the engine

Re: valve train noise???!!!

thanks for the help. I was planning a winter project of heads, cam, rockers, and headers. I think I might get this done and then do some performance tuning. Thanks again
