Is there some way of removing gasket maker from silicone gaskets? I'd like to re-use my oil pan gasket since it's basically brand new but I have all the snot from the last install on the gasket.

 

Elbow Grease should do it. You can try lacquer thinner and see if it will loosen the bond between the gasket and the RTV. Watch to see if the gasket is being attacked by the solvent. I do not know any way to avoid scraping, except for buying a new gasket.

 

I'll give it a shot but I have yet to find anything that'll remove "gasket making crap" from anything besides scraping or an abrasive wheel of some sort.

 

They're supposed to be installed dry.

 

Not at the RMS and the timing cover corners.

 

I'm assuming it's a cork gasket? If so throw it away an get a Neoprene one. If not RTV doesn't stick terribly well to Neoprene so just peel it off.

 

Apparently the gasket is silicone/rubber. Sticks very well.
I ended up buying a new Fel-Pro gasket. It says to install dry.
The GM service manual states to install the gasket with "RTV" at the corners on the timing cover and RMS.
I'll install this one dry. Hopefully I don't get a leak at the front cover as it's aftermarket chromed cast aluminum. That's much thicker than the stock stamped steel one.

 

Wait a minute I wasn't even thinking pan gaskets go on dry anyway, but do put that bit on the rear main and timing cover otherwise it will leak like a sieve make sure that chrome seals RTV+Chrome=Leak 9 times out of ten.

 

Install it dry or you'll squish out the gasket itself.

 

Well I installed it dry per your suggestions and Fel-Pro's suggestion. 4 ounces of oil (leftover from soaking the lifters) and the pan is leaking at the timing cover corner. At least I haven't filled it yet.
I guess i'll be dropping the pan and gooing the corners.
