Cam swap questions

I've got the stock hydraulic roller cam in my bone stock LO3 305. Can I go back to a flat tappet cam with the stock block? How wild of a cam can the stock computer take? I was planning on putting in a Comp Cam K12-256-4 from Summit. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku
I looked at Comp Cams online catalog and it showed any cam wilder than this and you need a chip. I don't want to be playing around with that.

Re: Cam swap questions

You could, but why would you do a silly thing like that?

Re: Cam swap questions

It's a stock low output 305 man. A notch above stock is enough for a daily driver like mine.

Re: Cam swap questions

problem with cam= domino effect. ie:
cam, then lifters, then springs, then converter then gears then tune.

also take in mind how many miles are on your engine... anything above 60k id be worried about my cam bearings taking another seating

Cam bearings dont "seat". The bearings would be the absolute least of my worries. The biggest problem I am having is why anyone would want to give up a roller to go flat tappet.

If you decide to do it though, shoot me a PM, i would like to get the spider from you.

Add pushrods to the list. Roller are shorter than flat tappet, need the longer ones.

Or, cam, timing set, springs, you're done.

Re: Cam swap questions

rs90,
Please don't go backward to a non-roller cam. There is nothing to be gained by doing this, only a lot of time, money, and disappointment.
How would you like to have more performance out of your 305 than you can get with that $382 cam kit from Summit, for a fraction of that price?
I just happen to have a brand new take-out LT1/L31 roller cam you could slip in there and not have to change anything else, or if you want I also have the brand new springs to replace your tired ones. Let me know if you're interested.
The iron head LT1/L31 cam has some deceivingly low duration numbers for the way it performs. It's ground with a 111 degree lobe separation and is a torque monster. In a 350 ci LT1, it makes good power to 5500 rpm. With the restrictive L31 intake, the power curve holds up to 5000 rpm. In the L03, it will be good to at least 5500 rpm.

Re: Cam swap questions

also if you go on summitt and search for a TPI cam they have a roller cam that is slightly more aggresive but no tuning will be needed... whole kit is about 150 i think
