Cam/Dist questions
Alright, I have a few questions. I'm rebuilding a motor and am getting http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku this cam. Will I have to modify anything in the block/heads for that amount of lift, and also, what's a good valve spring recommendation?
I'm also getting http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1∂=SUM%2D850001R&N=700+4294925143+4294839065+4294881256+115&autoview=sku this distributor. It says there's no tach drive. Where do I plug in the tach?
Thanks for any help fellas

Re: Cam/Dist questions
Whether or not you need to modify your heads depends on which heads you have.
"Tach-drive" is for old Corvettes that used a cable-driven tachometer. You can still connect your electronic tach.

Oh, cool. Didn't know that.
I have the heads from an 85 Caprice (305) that are going to be refurbished with the block, but I just want to make sure I'm getting the right valve springs because I read in another post that someone had too much lift (or something) and he would need to mill away part of the heads because of it (or something). It was like a .510 cam, and I just wanna make sure my .470 is okay.

Re: Cam/Dist questions
You'd have to assemble and check, but as long as everything's apart you might as well just get the spring pockets and valve guides machined regardless.

Re: Cam/Dist questions
Is that included with a normal head rebuild? I'm new to rebuilding engines, and I don't quite trust myself to do rebuild the heads right so I'm having the machine shop do it. Plus, don't have any of the tools.

Not really, but it only takes a couple of minutes to do, so it's not expensive.

Re: Cam/Dist questions
Thanks man.
Would I just ask them to remachine them or bore them out a little or what?

Just tell them you need x amount of lift and they should be able to help you figure out exactly what needs to be done.

Magnum 270H? Just out of curiosity, why did you pick that cam?

Re: Cam/Dist questions
I had talked to a few of my buddies about my other parts and the horsepower range I'm looking for, and they all said something in that neighborhood in terms of lift/duration, then I contacted the guys at COMP and they recommended that one to me.
