Massive Detonation!...or something?..HELP!!!!!
You guys should know my motor by now....
Im getting massive detonation at 4 grand and above. Its like a hit a rev limit or something and its start to dump fuel out the pipes.
I have no clue why its doing this.....if you guys kept up with all the problems and the stroker rebuild I had to do cause I cooked all the bearings and crank in my first bottom end cause of the oil pump and pick up tube.......this should be nothing new ..LOL...the motor gods just dont want me to have any fun...well I paid $1400 to have my bottom end fixed and I dont want to screw this one up...
Well the motor is exactly like it was before the rebiuld and I didnt get any kind of Detonation before. WHy am I getting it now?
Ive mess with timing and my fuel pressure but it still does it...
My fuel is set to 43psi whch is what Jamy at LSRacingchips.com says to set it at.
The motor is setup just like it was before all the wires are right where they should be...nothing has changed.
The only thing different that I know of was the cam is now set according to the cam card...I had it retared 1* SO that shouldnt even be noticable to me. and also I reused my head gaskets which were Felpro 1003's...the engine guy says they were fine but just to make sure they sealed ok...had me put a real like coat of that copper spray tack...other than that everything is the same....same plugs as I had in the first motor, they looked fine and still do ...Ive pulled 3 of them and they were a light tan color..
So why am I getting detonation...or spark knock and something....hell I dont know what it is...but once I get to 4000 or more it starts popping and sputtering and dumping fuel out the back so my friends say cause he was behind me and said the smoke was black and the tack goes haywire an starts bouncing from 4 to 7 grand.....
I need help!
if you need to know anything about the motor or anything just ask away!!
I would really like to get this fixed and I dont want to take it somewhere...and have somebody **** around with my car. Ive put to much time, money, headaches and heartaches into this...I want it right!..and want it right now!...LOL
so please help me out if you can!

Welll, you may want to pull all of the plugs and see what they tell you. Was there any signs of detonation on the ones you pulled? (with the engine cold engine I hope).
Off hand it sounds like it is going too rich. The black smoke and mis-firing points in that direction. This may be caused by the MAF going bad. Do you have or can you get a data log and take a look at it? Can also try the tap test on the MAF & ECM. With the engine idling tap on the MAF (gently). If the way the engine idles changes the MAF is on the way out. Do the same to the ECM, tap on it while the engine is idling. Any change and the ECM is bad.

the plugs I pulled looked fine......no sign of detonation at all. but then again it may so up in the plugs that I didnt pull.
Yeah misfire sounds about right too.....it all sounds the same to me.
I'll do what you said....I dont get any codes though!.......wouldnt I?
I dont have a way to data log...the connectors that I have are for serial connection and my laptop doesnt have that.....all I have are USB....unless they make an adaptor..serial to usb
could the dizzy being one tooth off cause any of this? I wouldnt think so cause the idle is fine...and if it was one tooth off....turning the dizzy would fix that?

Re: Massive Detonation!...or something?..HELP!!!!!
Won't necessarily get a code when the MAF or ECM starts going out.
As long as the timing is set correctly via a light with the EST connector open, it can be 300 teeth off and it won't matter. The tooth off stuff is because folks don't use a timing light. They try to just drop the distributor back in and hope it is in time.
I am assuming that the tune is OK. As you didn't change anything but the rotating assembly, correct?

correct!.....tune is the same.
I dont know where to begin...I headed out there now to see what I can find again.
Damn all this!...if its not one thing its another.
I'll go and check on what you said. Maybe water got inside some of my connections...
why does it only do it under load....if I rev it in the drive way its fine..

The EST wire that is to be unplugged....
If I unplug it nothing changes...so, where do the wires go to? its just one wire on each ond of the connector....one goes where and the other goes where? Im assuming one goes the the ECM? and the other goes to the ESC module?
correct?
Im wondering if my ESC is bad? or the ICM on the dizzy

One end goes to the ECM, the other end goes to the ICM. Double check the distributor that the 4-wire connector is firmly plugged in. Surprised you haven't thrown a code 42.

Re: Massive Detonation!...or something?..HELP!!!!!
will do...
ok heres another question?
since I have the MSD Digital6 plus...and it magnifies the spark..I have my gap on my plugs at .035...could it be that the box is blowing my spark out? and the plugs need to be gapped wider? seeing I have 10:6-1 compression?

Re: Massive Detonation!...or something?..HELP!!!!!
smaller gaps like that are better for a high compression engine/blown engine the extra compression is what "blows" out the spark .035 should be good for almost any compression you would run on the street
