timing?
timing?
ok... so i have heard alot of good things here on thirdgen.org. lets wee what you got!
i have a 91 RS. it is the 5 speed 305. the car idles at around 1500-1700. i just did the tune up(plugs wires cap and rotor) and it did not change. stayed the same. i put the timing light on it and it looks to be advanced alot. the mark is just off the tab. so if i am looking straight down from the front of the car it is all the way to the left. slightly off toi be exact. now my question is how do i set the timing? it is not a hei type distributer. it does not have the thing on the top anyways. i would assume it is the points type distributer. again i am not sure. so how would i go about setting the timing? would this also lower my idle rpms? are the rpms supposed to be that high to begin with? sorry for all the questions but when you have a site and hear all the good things about it i like to use it. thanks in advance for all the help as i am sure i will be needing more.

Re: timing?
high timing will make it idle high. I'm pretty sure you have a HEI type but with remote coil... the ignition coil is not mounted to the top of the dizzy. i know how to do it for a TPI car but i'm assuming the concept is the same for TBI cars as well
should be a EST wire that controls dizzy timing with the ecm..you need to disconnect that to adjust the distributor. its usually located behind the passenger side strut tower in the back corner of hte motor. single wire with single connector. tan with black stripe i believe. disconnect that, start motor and check timing. then adjust distributor counterclockwise to advance, clockwise to retard timing. on my 89, the big valley on the timing marker is 0 degrees. you want to be left of that like the next valley or 2 up to the left i think. 6 degrees base.

Re: timing?
ok so i went out and set the timing the right way this time. didnt know about the wire i was supposed to unplug, so i set it and it was right at the zero degree mark. so that is good. wo does anyone know why my idle is so high? i double checked all the vacumn lines and they are all plugged in. so there is no vacumn leak. any other ideas?

Re: timing?
IAC-thats your idle air control valve. You have throttle body injection, is that correct. If so then its attached to the passenger side of the throttle body behind the throttle position sensor. It looks like a big bolt with a plug end coming out of it. You'll have to take off the air cleaner. Unhook the battery too.
