Testing the starter

how do i test the starter on a 92 firebird? It sometimes makes a clicking sound and the car won't start but thats after i drive it for awhile if i let it sit it'll start. i just want to be able to test it before i go buy a new one

Clean the connections at the battery, the ground to the block, and the fat wire on the starter with a wire brush (after removing the wires of course). If you still have the problem, replace it.

Usually its the solenoid that goes bad. As suggested, check the connections. If you're on a tight budget, replacing just the solenoid might be all you need.
