Dual-snorkel on a T/A. Wadaya think about ?

Thanks to all the good advices I had with you guys, I finally make the big jump : a complete rebuild of my LU-5 305 !

Bye-bye stock cam and Cross-fire, hello 4-bbl and Dynomax headers (among other good things ).

The good fact is that, aside that being largely rebuilt, I keep all the engine accessories - AC, Cruise, you name it.

Then comes the question about the final touch : an air cleaner.
I have the availability of a L69 Dual-snorkel filter. Yet, I'm wondering where it sucks the air from.

On Camaros, the air-scoops are on the radiator support, right ? Is there enough air going there ? And does somebody knows if, with Firebird sheetmetal, there would be at least as much ?

Thanks a lot

Re: Dual-snorkel on a T/A. Wadaya think about ?

On Camaros, the L69 scoops pick up air from the headlight pockets; under the edge of the hood, above the lights.

Clearly, not applicable to a Firebird's disappearing HLs. Plus, the Firebird hood is lower, meaning there's not enough height on top of the radiaor core support to mount the scoops. The hood sits MUCH closer to the core support.

You'd need to find some other place to get the cold (outside) air from. Preferably someplace (a) up high enough to keep from getting water from puddles; (b) sheltered, to keep water from getting in when it rains, or when driving in a heavy rain; (c) isolated from the engine compartment; (d) within easy reach of a large, reasonably straight duct.

You can see how the Camaro arrangement is actually pretty good.

Some other typical arrangements are, through a hole or holes in the core support; or, from the inside of the fender.

IIRC the Pontiac L69 cars got their air through the hood from the windshield cowl area. The hood had a duct and the air cleaner had a rubber seal that met the hood. Not readily duplicated by the DIYer.

Haem, that's what I was afraid of...

Yet, your system is great Thomas. Would you still be ready to build one and sell ?

Ouch ! I just understood that your set-up won't fit my car

Yours is a 1991 T/A with the dual-grills upfront. The same ones that feed the scoop.

Mine is a 1983 Crossfire-equipped, with the Power Bulge hood. No grills, no flow

Back to the start. And I'm not conviced by a stock Firebird L69 set-up.

Re: Dual-snorkel on a T/A. Wadaya think about ?

I tought I had recently read that first trans am's had the Power Bulge.
Even without the holes in the hood my set up feeds air as goos as a open element. But since you have the original Power Bulge it would be a crime to not use it. Power Bulge Hood air intake always attracted my attention, couldent you adapt it to a airbox for your new setup?
L69 air box modified with a flat base should work excellently, there is plenty of air behind the headlamps. If one snorkle feeds lo3's 170hp, immagine what 2 snorkles can do.

I dont know if the L69 scoops are any taller, but Firebirds came with at least one scoop mounted to the radiator support. You could feed from below the support if you're really concerned. Take a look at the SLP CAI for TPI cars, pulls from the fender area.
