Re: 1989 CAMARO IROC-Z FUEL GAUGE PROBLEMS

This happens in my cutlass, you need to replace the sending unit. The gas guage in my iroc doesnt work right either, its the sending unit. The sending unit is in the tank, its not that hard to replace, you could try looking for one in a boneyard but thats taking a chance that that one probably is bad too.

I actually just had the sender on mine replaced and it still does this, but it doesnt ever show past the full mark anymore. Pretty irritating

camaropunk, my only other guess is that its the gauge or the wiring? first id check the gauge fuse and see if thats good, then id go to the junk yard and get a new fuel gauge and see if that does anything, shouldnt cost you anything.

the gauge is changing because the fuel is sloshing, you probably notice the same thing going up and down hills too. If i remember right the stock tanks don't have baffles.

I would look into a new gauge also. The sending unit is expensive from an auto store if you cant find it from a junkyard...reason being, have to buy pump also. I had a boucy one, and got a new gauge. Works fine.

Yeah, I replaced the sender and it was a $280 dollar part, but since the tank had to be dropped I though it would be best to have it done along with the fuel pump. I understand that some movement is normal, but it seems a bit much for fuel to be sloshing, im still hunting for a guage

The ones in the junkyard are Junk. Chevy sells new ones for a mere $670.00 without the fuel pump. Such a deal. I think Summit sells a universal sending unit that with some creative modifications could be made to work.
That's what I did.

Well here in California I called at least 3 Chevy dealers and they all wanted at least $670.00. If I need another one some day I will get it shipped in.
I told them that was ridiculously high but that was what they wanted.

Maybe that was with install too, that would make more sense. I ended up paying $775 total on my gas tank for the sending unit, pump and tank screw hole repair and labor

Re: 1989 CAMARO IROC-Z FUEL GAUGE PROBLEMS

no, That's just the sending unit, tubes and everything but a new pump.

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/catalog/frameset.cfm

I checked out the link above and it has the full price of $685.00, and they mark it down to $356.00. That still a lot of money. I bought a universal one for about $40.00 and adapted it to work with my old tubing.

I have the same problem folks......and my oil gauge on my cluster does the same thing too. BUt the gas thing is really frustrating......it sucks when u gotta calculate your miles per gallon based on how many gallons you just pumped in your tank.....lol

My oil gauge was wack for a while, but i replaced the sender for like 20 bucks and its perfect now...It does suck calculating that way. Im hoping a new gauge steadys mine out a bit

In my opinion, if money is an issue, buy a tank from a junkyard. Even if you gotta drive 50 miles. I bought a whole tank with everything in it for $50.
