the infamous cold start valve
the infamous cold start valve
does any body know how to elimate the cold start valve on an 87 l98 gta i have problems with starting the car after its been running i know that my fuel pressure dropes very quickly the injectors have been replaced at some time but i dont think the cold start valve was and i believe it is leaking down. when you try to restart the car turns over and over and eventuly starts and you smell a rich gas smell. If it sits for a day or so it fires right up thanks

Have you priced a new one? Instead of eliminating, I think you'd be better off replacing. If thats even the cause. I know nothing, but this site is the best for answers... Hope you get it solved.

'89 was the only MAF year to not have the cold start valve. The valve out of the system, and a PROM from that year appropriate for the engine size should do the trick. I don't believe anything else about the TPI changed that year (but I'm no TPI guru).
Re: the infamous cold start valve
A lot of guys have said they just disconnected it and left it in place, and their cars still worked fine. If your is actually leaking down though, you'd be better off removing it, and using a cold start injector eliminator kit. There's several aftermarket suppliers who sell them. One of them was either Accel or Edelbrock. The problem with using an 89 prom chip would be that 89's have the VATS anti-theft programming. Of course you could have someone who knows chip programming disable the VATS in the prom, but it'd be cheaper and probably easier to just get the CSI eliminator kit. The extra injector is really only needed when it's like bitter cold outside, and even then you could get by without it.

I have to agree dude, the Accel kit is pretty damn spendy for what you get. You can always make your own, that's what I did. I took the fitting on the end of the fuel rail where the c/s line goes in, and tapped some small threads into the hole. Then I got a small stainless steel set screw in that thread size, put a little teflon thread sealer on it, and screwed it into the hole. Then for the hole in the runner, I took a piece of flat steel about 1/16" thick, drilled a hole in it for the runner bolt, and used a bench grinder to round it to the right shape to cover the hole in the runner. Then just take some black rtv, I used "the right stuff", and smear a thin layer on the block off plate, then tighten it down over the hole using the runner bolt. Or if you prefer, you could get some cheap gasket paper from the parts store and make your own gasket. I was into the whole "block-off kit" probably less than 5 bucks. If you're set on keeping your c/s injector functional, I'm sure someone here on the boards probably has one laying around in their garage that they'd be willing to sell to you cheap.
