Can i test the orange/red wire going from the mallory to coil
I have a mallory hyfire 6a going to a HEI coil. I am getting no spark.
The LED on the mallory is blinking when I crank it, indicating it's picking up a signal, so hopefully that half is working. I just don't know if it's outputing power to the coil.
I put a multimeter on the red coil wire while I cranked it and it read maybe .3-.6 volts, but I really don't know how good a test that is.
Any other test I can do? I tried a different coil and that didn't help.
This is driving me crazy. I guess it's possible it suddenly failed, but I just put in a tranny. Almost have to think I hit something but it has the 12v from the battery to mallory, the 12 igniton switch, the led blinks saying the green and purple pickup work. That just leaves the black and orange running to the yellow and red coil wires.

The way a CD (Capacitive Discharge) ignition system works doesn't lend itself to probing the wires to the coil with a DVOM. It hits the coil with a very brief, very intense shot of juice- like a very intese "blip" and then nothing until it fires again.. Nothing that a DVOM (digital or analog) could pick up on with any accuracy.
