alright i have a 1991 camaro with a 383 tpi with all the goodies...

1.) all of a sudden when i start the car and let it run it sound like every ten seconds or so it makes a little 'pop' noise thru the exhaust only for the first minute...

2.) when i drive it ill come to a complete stop and the car wants to move and ill have my foot pressed on the brake so hard it feels like i would bust out the floor board, so ill put it in neutral and my rpms will rev up to 2,000 maybe 2,500! so ill hit the gas and it will kick itself down to normal idle.........then when im driving along the car will pull itself so again ill put it in neutral and lookie here its up to the same 2,000-2,500 rpms. i got the throttle cable looked at and its fine along with this and that, the only thing that the motor shop tells me is a could have a bad throttle body?

someone please give me an idea!

 

could be a long shot, but the popping is usually timing and increase in rpms could also be timing if way out of wack. I had a similar issue on a motor like this and it progressively got worse by backfiring on any throttle given. Pull the distributor and look at the gear and roll pin for missing teeth or sheared teeth and damaged roll pin. That is what I found wrong with mine, replaced the gear and ran like a charm.

Just like joe said, check your timing to make sure your on the mark. Typically, its 6 degrees and make sure your tan wire is disconnected which is located next to the firewall on the passenger side. Then when you have established that you are on target then move from there.

timing gun was used and it looked perfect with mild throttle, but at idle it was bouncing around a bit...i will ask them to check to see if the teeth are shot and see what they say...also what i dont understand is that it only pops when it idles for the first minute, then when it drives it only pops maybe 10 times down the block then stops!? but the throttle never quits acting up!

Is there an SES light with the RPMs climbing? Sounds like the IAC valve is opening up all the way for some reason, or maybe is sticking and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Maybe check your spark plug wires. I crossed up wires 2 and 4 once and it popped through the exhaust every few seconds.

 

light comes on after roughly 5 minutes of driving, i believe the code reads 'ambient air temperature' .....im stumped, if anything i want the throttle fixed, its just getting out of control trying to drive it anywhere
