How long Can it go
I had a new motor droped in the car about 6000 miles ago. The shop told me the ticking noise was my carb due to its age. About 4500 miles I had it rebuilt and put on my self. The carb is great. I went up to Oreilly's Auto parts to get the Alt tested, and the guy testing it "an old gear head guy" told me it sounds like you got a valve not going and that I might want to check into setting valve lash. And that the exshuast sound was coming thru the carb. I did notice alot of carbon in the Intake manifold.
I am wondering if 6000 miles can destroy the valve train. I plan on setting valve lash tomorrow and see how it does. I guess I won't be getting that tranny this month.
Thanks for you
advice as always

The CC carb ticks as part of its normal operation. If it isn't ticking, it isn't working.
Improperly adjusted rockers can burn up valves in a lot less than 6000 miles.
"Exhaust sound coming through the carb" is typically in the form of a fireball. "Carbon" in the intake manifold may or may not be a problem. Personally, I use an AMSOIL gasoline additive that keeps my intake squeaky clean, but a little coating from the EGR valve isn't unusual. Where exactly is this carbon, and how are you seeing it?

Re: How long Can it go
can you get a sound clip of the ticking? Was it there before the engine swap or only after? If it came after the swap I'd think something along the lines of a valve misadjusted or an exhaust leak..
