Valve damage, Cause and Effect
Valve damage, Cause and Effect
In my recent and ongoing troubles with my 92 'RS 305 TBI, I've discovered that one valve is stuck closed and two are hanging/catching on something as they open. All three are intake valves on the left/Passenger side. The driver side valves are fine. I've gotten two diffrent opinions so far. One says "bad gas" and the other says "bad valve job". What causes these things to happen and how can you tell the diffrence between them? I'm asking this because it is a new area of knowledge and I don't wan't to be ripped off by the ones who did my valve job last. I'm certian it's not bad gas because the valves were making noise even in proper adjustment from the first time I cranked the motor, and I haven't even been through a whole tank of gas yet (20 gal Tank). If you have or can find any pictures with comparissons of the diffrence that would be great. Thanks for your help.

check your spark plugs on these cylinders,if they are damaged then theres not enough clearance(possible causes ,shaved heads, pistons hitting valves, foreign object dropped in intake by accident, valve stems bent during head assy.later jimmy

Re: Valve damage, Cause and Effect
It is not possible for a valve to "stick closed". That's BS. Cross it off your list.
It is not possible for anything having to do with gasoline to cause valves not to move. Cross that off your list as well. All of the "gas" talk is BS.
It is not possible for valves to "hang" or "catch" on something as they open. Not only that, it is not possible to observe any such thing, due to the tension of the valve springs. Throw that out. More BS.
It is not possible for any feature of a "valve job" (which usually refers to removing the heads, disassembling the valves from them, grinding new seat surfaces on the valve and on the corresponding surface on the head where they seal, and reassembling everything) to cause valves not to move, open imperfectly, etc. Dismiss that thought. I'll let you figure out what kind of fertilizer that idea is.
What is REALLY going on here?
When you say "proper adjustment", describe how you know this.
What else has ever been done to this motor? Cam replaced perhaps?

may check piston to valve clearance. ps what size rockers do you have.
----------
may want to also check cam pin. if this pin is missing may still run due to the bolt on the cam being there but may let cam move enough to bend the valves specialy during high aceleration.
