Need some help guys....
have a 90 GTA that was originally a LB9/700R4 car. Now its a speed density LT1/700R4 car that I got out of a 93 Camaro and its having a little problem and I cannot figure it out.
After letting it sit for about a day with a lot of rain, it started to stumble and pop like it was out of time when it reached operating temp. Then it died and I tried to restart it. After a couple tries to restart it, it ran for 2 seconds then died. I left it where it was, went home and came back the next day and it fired right up and was fine for a week. Today, the same damn thing happened. I had it towed home and started diagnosing. I have excellent fuel pressure, I have no way of pulling codes..(no port). I checked spark coming out of the coil and its good but I'm not sure how you can check the Opti. It is unvented so is there anyway some moisture got in there and is dicking with me or is this a sign of Opti failure or is it something different. Coming out of the exhaust during this problem is black smoke while its wheezing and when it clears up there is no smoke. I pulled plugs and they are in good shape, a little black so I cleaned them, and dropped a new set of AC wires in. Still wheezes and coughs like its pulling spark. Then comes the pre-det. noise.
I'm frustrated as hell because I am a competent mechanic and I'm getting beat by a ghost problem! Any help is appreciated.

Just over 70k, does it need a cap and rotor kit or does it need a complete unit.
