Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: what oil pan vortec?

Right; 97 would be consistent with 86-up.

Re: what oil pan vortec?

As long as it's a pan for a one piece rear main seal motor (86-up UNTIL you get to the completely different LS-series of motors!!) and it fits your chassis, it'll work. So, yes, you can definitely reuse say, an original 3rd gen F-body pan on a Vortec engine. Frankly, I'm not sure the original Vortec truck pan is any different than a much older 3rd gen F-body pan. Really, the Vette oil pan is about the only "oddball" pan that won't drop into most other GM cars.
