I dont drive my camaro to often, but I did drive it about a month ago. When I was taking it to work, everything was working perfectly (maybe had been a month since I drove it), however, when I got out of work, it was having a really hard time starting, just kept turning over like I was out of gas. Finally started, but I wasnt getting any kind of acceleration while in overdrive. It would kick into the lower gear then, immediatly go back into its top gear, going at about 2200-2400 rpm. I then clicked it into regular drive and it worked fine.

I stopped driving it again, and got into it about 2 weeks later, and all it would do is turn over, never would start. I still cant get it to start, and now my battery has died. The battery dying may have something to do with my stereo being jacked, or from just sitting.

I was told from a friend that it may not be starting because the carb is clogged, and thats why it just turns over. Also, my girlfriends car had a similar problem, and hers turned out to be her timing belt (and now her valves are bent (ford focus)).

Any ideas?

 

Sounds like the fuel pump to me. It was probably weak and getting weaker on your way home. Now it probly doesnt have enough umph to get fuel to the engine.

 

Fuel pump died on me about 2 years ago, so the one in it now is relatively new. And if the pump was going bad (like the one i had 2 years ago) would I still be able to run good in drive, and not overdrive.

Also, a couple things I had forgotten to mention, the "check engine" light was on when i finally got it to start after work that night, but not earlier when I was driving. Not to sure how helpful that is, see as how its a generic light. Also, when I last tried to start it (after the stereo was stolen) my "security" light was coming on when i tried to start it.

 

does it have a carburetor

 

From what I'm told yes. I dont know alot about cars, but like I had mentioned earlier, my friend said my carb may be blocked and to buy some carb cleaner. In the case that i do this, where would I spray the cleaner?

And an update, just got home from work, and tried to give it a go, battery is fine, and when I turn the key, it gets half of a turn, and then starts clicking really quick and loud. About every 4 seconds the clicking stops for a moment, and it does abotu a half turn.

 

Thats cause your battery isnt charged all the way yet, it doesnt have enough juice. Let it charge, then put some gas in the carb, not a lot, if it trys to start then its not getting fuel. I doubt your carbed is blocked. I had a freind that is fuel pump went bad. It would start, but hard, once it got running it would work fine, it lasted a couple of days, then no more, he changed the pump and it worked fine again. my moneys on the pump. The reason it worked fine in drive but not over drive is because in drive it gets a lot more pressure, in overdrive not as much rpm, less vacuum, less fuel is needed.

So your saying to put cas in the carb, but I dont exactly know what that means. Wheres the carb, and how do I put gas into it (unless its obvious).

Also, when your saying filters, are we talking about fuel filters only, or oil and air?

Oh yea, I understand, but as far as things like filters and what not, my father can help me out. He can help me out with most things about it, unless it requires like a lift or something. Only asking to try to get a feel for whats going on so we can work on it.

 

Fuel filter, if it is clogged it will not let fuel get to the engine. If you have a carb it would be on the top of the engine in the center.
