Automatic Antenna

----------
I was out exercise driving my 87' and turned the radio on. When I got back to the garage I turned off the engine but started hear a buzzing sound coming from under the hood, just under where the automatic antenna recesses behind the right front quarter panel.

I turned the radio off and the antenna came down but the antenna motor never shut off. Fortunately I have the battery rigged up on a kill switch but now, when I start her, the antenna will not come up when I turn on the radio and, if I leave the radio off, the motor continues to run trying to stow the antenna even though it is already stowed.

Re: Automatic Antenna

Are any thirdgen owners aware of a quick fix for my ailing antenna?

Re: Automatic Antenna

Welcome to TGO. The relay (unhook it and the motor will stop) is under the pass side of the dash. A fix kit is available from GM, I believe. A search will probably find the above part number. FYI, I replaced the whole assembly, which I purchased from GM, a couple of years ago. I don't know if the piece has been discontinued or not. GM 22062580.

Re: Automatic Antenna

Thanks JamesC. Is the relay labeled?

I'm gonna run out to the garage and look for it now.

Re: Automatic Antenna

I don't remember the connection being labeled, but it's been about 13 years since I worked on mine...

There's a little plastic line that fits inside the metal antenna shaft that winds up onto a spool inside the motor that is broken. IMO, its probably easier just to replace the whole unit. It's kind've a tight fit up under the fender, but just pop out the inner fender well and you should be able to swap the antenna out.

Re: Automatic Antenna

Ordered my antenna unit from GM parts direct a few
months ago that was suppose to be a direct replacement
for our cars. It wasn't Its universal.

Had to fab up a new bracket. Plumbers strap.
Easy to do. 3 wires colorcoded rite, just cut and
splice in. Works great
They also had a repair kit for broken band as yours is.
Relay should be under middle of pass dash bottom lip as both 87s.

Re: Automatic Antenna

Pulling the wheel and inner fender and even having
to fab up a bracket if needed shouldn't take 3 or 4
hours with (kool Aid) breaks in between
