383 balancer?'s
i ordered a 383 kit, with an eagle crank, externally balanced. i opted not to my the balanced kit because im gonna be putting a t-56 in and ill have to use a 4 th gen flywheel. im tyring to figure out which harmonis balancer to use for a reasonable price. i dont wanna drop 2-300 bucks on the damper. i know the damper has to be for a externally balanced engine and for the 400. im not gonna be running this higher than 6500 continously. it will be primarily street driven. maybe see the strip maybe once or twice a year if that. so which damper would be best for a reasonable amount of money. less money i have to dish out for the balancer the better. i know you get what you pay for.

I think you've made a big mistake. If this is a one-piece rear main seal crank, then get it internally balanced. A LT1 flywheel will bolt to it without any further balancing needed. And, you can use a neutrally balanced damper up front.
Stop the order if you can.

You'd have to find a flywheel that's balanced to the 400 spec (which is what an externally balanced 383 most likely is). With an internally balanced setup you can use a stock flywheel.

Re: 383 balancer?'s
ohhh ok. i havent purchased the flywheel yet.
so this is what im understanding. is if im gonna run a t-56 from a 94-97 camaro/ firebird, with the stock flywheel then i need to re-order the stroker kit to be an internal balance kit.
but if i dont re-order, and stay with the external balance kit, im gonna have to find a fly wheel and those im taking it cost alot more.
which is better to have an external kit or an internal kit?

The one that WORKS with the least putzing around.
Whch would of course be, stock (internal) balance. Assemble, bolt up, done. No worries.

You'd use all your stock stuff. Assemble, bolt up, done. No 400 anything.
Too easy. Don't outsmart yourself over it.
Get the right "kit", and put all that "external" crap in your rearview mirror.

Re: 383 balancer?'s
ok, onto my other question, would a stock balancer be good enough? like i said before im not gonna be running 6500 constantly. and im hardly gonna see the track?
also which size balancer? i know they come in different sizes. should i get a stock 89 L-98 balancer. or when i get the t-56, should i get a balancer that matches the year of the transmission.

Re: 383 balancer?'s
Your stock one should be fine, if it's in good shape. If the rubber is deteriorated, get a stock replacement one, like a Pioneer.
The crank damper is not connected in any way with the transmission. It does not even care if there's a transmission there, let alone what kind or year it is. Its function is not related to the trans.

Stock LT1/T56 flywheel - yes.
Just to make sure all the bases are covered, what block will you be using?

Just make sure the crank in the stroker kit is for that block. Would hate to hear you ended up with a 2-piece rear main seal crank.
A lot of the internally-balanced (okay, for sofa's sake, "stock balance") kits are one-piece rear main seal.
I've got a Pioneer damper on my 350. It would work just fine for your stroker as well. Nice piece, much better than the stock stuff.
Glad we caught you before you got in too deep.

Re: 383 balancer?'s
i called the company, and there changing my order to internally balanced 1 piece rms. yeah it was a good thing that you guys helped it, or else i would have been spending more money than i have to.
i was pretty much gonna buy a damper just for a piece of mind.
