hard to start when hot

I have an 88 Camaro iroc 305 tpi 5 speed, its been having problems starting when it get to operating temperature, but it runs fine untill i shut it off. i do get the smell of fuel when its hot i was wondering if it is running rich? the original problem was it was slow cranking when hot but i removed the starter and cleaned all the brushes and armatures. any ideas whats going on fellas? it now cranks fine when hot but still will not start no matter how i move the accelerator pedal. it will start if i let it sit for about 30 minutes.

....A good way to fix the slow crank is to burn your own computer chip like I did..I adjusted the the fuel parameters and now it starts up fast every time hot or cold.....Lots of stickeys on the slow crank in the DIY section

Re: hard to start when hot

Put your fuel pressure gauge on it and see how long it takes for the fuel pressure to go away when you shut it off. It should drop no faster than a couple of pounds an hour. If it drops faster than that, then you either have a leaky injector (HIGHLY likely if you still have the stock Multec junk ones in it) or a bad fuel pump.

Re: hard to start when hot

were is the test port for the fuel pressure gauge? and if i turn the car off it should only drop a few psi per hour correct? and i guess if it doesnt drop down immediatly than its not a fuel issue. a leaky injector could very well be the cause it does seem to run extremly rich.

Re: hard to start when hot

The fuel test port is on one of the fuel rails. Looks alot like a tire valve.

I highly recommend getting rid of the factory Multec garbage injectors, if it tturns out that one or more has failed. They are just an all around crappy piece. Most people who rebuild injectors won't even touch em because they're not worth the trouble. Too many of em are the "walking dead"; they do things like leak and cause the problem you're having, shorted turns so they draw too much current and one bad one makes the others on that side of the motor (batch fire, one driver drives 4) not work right either, etc.

Get a set like these right here and get rid of the Multecs. These are the same rating (19 #/hr), and fit right into their place. They are altogether better in every way.

Re: hard to start when hot

the initial timing is set to 12 degrees advanced, but i dont think that has anything to do with it, i can unplug to coil wire and cranking remains the same.

Ford Mustang injectors will fit on my camaro? the connector is the same and all i mean? i've been told that the cold start fuel injector could possibly leak and cause this problem, would i have to replace that injector as well?

It was worth a shot. At least you checked it, and ruled it out.

Yes. Only difference is, the Bosch injector is slightly shorter than the Rochester (maybe 1/16" difference); so you have to be careful about getting them seated properly.

Yes the cold start injector can also fail and cause this, as well as its little temp switch that works it. You might want to post on the TPI board and ask for possible solutions, if it turns out that that's bad.

Re: hard to start when hot

So to test for a leaky cold start injector i would hook up a fuel pressure gauge and turn the key on and see if there is a pressure drop correct? where is this temp switch you speak of? and what does it do, determine when i need the extra fuel?

I forget... just follow the wires ont he cold start injector.
and what does it do, determine when i need the extra fuel?
Right: it only opens the injector when it's cold. All it does, is continuously squirt some extra gas in there. Very simple and crude. People who re-program their PROMs often eliminate it, and add extra fuel in their programming via their program.

Yes, except that you FIRST would have to make sure that the 8 regular injectors, AND the check valve in the pump, are all good.
