my dipstick fell out!

i feel kind of stupid asking this because im sure its an easy answer.. but im new to domestic cars. i was swapping the headers on my 350 and the oil dip stick fell out! it looks like it was just held in there with some type of sealant. I've never come across one that doesn't bolt in/screw in. Do i just use silicone or something and try to reseal it??
please help! i need to get this back together tomorrow.
THANK YOU!!

Re: my dipstick fell out!

Its pretty far for a thick fluid to travel under barely any lateral G forces. Unless you strapped your thirdgen to a roller coaster :-\

My comes free all the time, doesn't fall out or leak. But, It can easily
be moved around, it doesn't hurt anything. Actually, it helps when
it's in your way and you can remove altogether.

Re: my dipstick fell out!

that doesn't bolt in/screw in
Ahhh, but it does, from the factory.
the headers
There's why yours DOESN'T. There's a little tab on it, right up near the top, that used to go to one of the exhaust manifold bolts. The bolt had a little stud on the end, the tab went on that, and a nut held it on. With headers, that whole hardware arrangement is probably missing now, so the tube is free to just go wherever it wants.

If it just absolutely WILL NOT stay put, go to the junkyard and get such a stud off of a car; make a spacer of an appropriate length, to simulate the thickness of the exh man flange; and put it back the way GM made it.

That way, NOT ONLY does it come out when you want it to, BUT ALSO, it stays put the rest of the time.
