Alternator Wiring Question - Brown/Red Combo Wires
Alternator Wiring Question - Brown/Red Combo Wires
I have a 90' Camaro TBI with a 350 swap and the positive battery cable going to the starter accidentally grounded on the oil dip stick from improper insulation. We fixed that issue. Car starts fine and drives fine but the alternator does not charge.
Alternator Has a 2 wire plug, along with the thick 4-8 gauge positive battery cable wire with nut coming off of it.
The Red Wire on the plug shows +12V (confirmed with multimeter)
The Brown wire on the plug:
-Shows no Voltage
-No Continuity to the battery cable (+12v wire)
-No Continuity to groud
-So its an "open" wire I suppose?
The Thick 4-8 gauge wire with the nut (red wire) shows only 0.46 volts, though it obviously should show battery voltage regardless of key position IIRC.
I checked the Crappy Wiring Diagram the Haynes Manual shows, and it shows the brown wire running to the Fan fuse (which is fine), though my multimeter is showing 0 volts on it.
The thick 4-8 gauge wire shows it going to the battery though there is I believe a fusible link, but either I dont know the location of it or I cant find it.
Any Advice Guys?
(Alternator is good, it is brand new & has been tested at autozone)

on my 91rs the fusible link for alt is next to the battery on a distribution post near the rad.
yours could have been put somewhere else during the swap but take a look in general area.
did you do the swap your self?

no i didnt do the swap myself (although i wish i had because the guy didnt do a wonderful job... haha)
But yes the link was on the post between the radiator and the battery

Re: Alternator Wiring Question - Brown/Red Combo Wires
I hate when people post a problem , and then never finish up with what happened . Did you fix this? I am having a similar problem after my 350 swap. I was not getting a charge back to the battery from the alternator. Got a new alternator, and still no charge back to battery. So I was hoping you found your problem and mine was the same. I was already thinking it might be aa fusible link. Can't remember, do those just kind of split when they go bad ? Anyone know ?

Hi there, yes i did fix it after a while, it had turn out that when putting the valve covers on i had tapped the main power bolt on the alternator (and of course the battery was in
) Making a beautiful short between it and the block... So yes it was the fusible link, there most all located right next to the battery on the power distribution post. Once they blow they will have a small split, or sometimes they'll just be real flimsy compared to the other ones, i picked a new one up from autozone (not all have them) and easily spliced it in.Hope this helps!!

Thank you very much for the quick response. I have just read what seems 100's of posts on here with unresolved questions and no follow-up on the outcome of the problem. I am working on it now to try and see if I did something similar to what you did. I will follow up with results when done. Thanks, Dave

Re: Alternator Wiring Question - Brown/Red Combo Wires
I'm stil working on mine. Haven't found the problem just yet. My fusible links all look good. Although I only have 1 by the radiator area. I have 3 down at the starter area though. Just pointing that out for readers, because these cars seem to have wierd stuff like that a lot.
