Tach problem

there is something wrong with my tachometer, like right now my car is off and the tach says 2500 and when i start it it will go to 3000 and then when i drive it it will go up to 7000 and it will also peg out, would this be a wiring problem or what cause i know my engine isnt really running at that high of rpm's how do i fix this?
