my 383 vs 350 crate

i was looking at building up my 355 to a 383 with a few other goodies... then i looked at CSB crate motors. I was wondering if someone could help me out and estimate how much hp i will be making with my 383 so i can compare it to a crate. i can get a crate 350 with 350 hp for $5,176 or 375 hp for $5,328.
My 87 GTA 350 motor (stock with 225 hp)
- Eagle Rotator Kit for 383
- bored .30 over
- brodix ik 180 heads
- comp xtreme energy hydraulic roller cam (around 230 duration and 530 lift)
- comp roller lifters
- comp Pro magnum roller rockers- 1.6 ratio
- torque converter ~2500 stall
- edelbrock shorty headers
- 3" flowmaster exhaust
- 10.3:1 comp ratio

- the 383 set up will cost me around $5,400 (including the rebuild) and I need to find out what kind of hp that will get me.

- the crate will give me 350 hp for around $5,200.

I REALLY appriciate the help!

Re: my 383 vs 350 crate

What intake setup are you running???

that 383 should be near 425 crank hp i'd say, maybe abit more but not with stock TPI. Even aftermarket TPI should need porting to make 425hp. go with the 383. those crates are overpriced for that power. ZZ4 is cheaper and delivers a solid 340-350hp, but TPI will choke that to near 280-290

also may i suggest ik200 heads or the race ready 200cc's. 383 will like that abit more

yea i was thinking about getting the holley stealth ram before i decided to go with a 383... but i can only afford so much right now with my budget. i will be plenty happy with even 350 hp, considering i was around 265 the last time i drove it! so with the stock tpi intake and the ik180's, i could be a little under 400 hp??

Re: my 383 vs 350 crate

HSR will love that cam of around 230 degrees duration at .050" and a 383. Thats a good combo

I think stock TPI on there will be somewhere around 340-350hp on motor. Stock TPI stuff is KILLING it. Siamese and port the stock base while your at it, that will help alittle

Don't forget the tranny- I'd hate to see you put in a great motor, drive it for a week, and then park it when the tranny goes out. The hip bone is connected to the knee bone... if you follow.

If you're willing to spend $5400 making 375-425 HP, you'd better figure on needing to spend that much again handling it - transmission, torque converter, rear end, suspension, etc..

Re: my 383 vs 350 crate

depends on how you drive. stock trans as long as its in decent shape as it sits will handle that power as long as you dont continuously beat on it and over heat it alot.

my stock trans let out at 140K miles or so, after beatin on it on the street alot. Just was time to go and that was with a mild exhaust only L98.

your trans may fry up in a fewdays or last a few years depends on how you drive and how much racing you do.

Best bet is to have money on the side ready for when it goes, or else do it right and rebuild it as you do the motor at the same time

tranny rebuilds for up to 500hp or so will be roughly 1000-1300 bucks, depends where you go. I got mine done for 980 in cash thats built for 450-500hp/tq or so. Not the heaviest rebuild you can get but not a stock rebuild either.

id be good with just beefing up my tranny for around $1000, torque converter- around $300, if i were lookin at 3:73's, would they go for around 1000? for suspension i have kyb struts/shocks and trw heavy duty springs... is there anything else you would recommend for suspension?

Subframe connectors (you mean you don't have them yet???).

Poly bushings all around.

You'll need more than gears for the rear to hold up behind 425 HP. Even 350 HP will test it.

$300 is a cheapie converter, not something to which you'd want to trust your $1000 investment in the tranny.

i bought the car with around 265 hp, and i havent done anything to it yet... im not even sure what subframe connectors are, or poly bushings.
what would you recommend for a torque converter?

edge racing is about 550 bucks shipped. Good converters 3000-3400 stall depending on which setup you go with
