Stall Speed? Or Failing Transmission?

Hi!

Ok I was wondering if someone could tell me the difference between me having a failing transmission and a stall speed converter....

I have a 1982 Trans AM 305ci....

It depends what it's doing. When in doubt, pull the pan to see if there's any hard parts in it.

First guess, I'd say tranny is bad.

A good high stall will smoke the tires, bad tranny won't.

I would'nt go with that, it sounds like your tranny's slipping to me. Certainly someone you know is a little more knowledgeable about cars and can help you? All it would take is one take off to tell you. There's really no mistaking the two.

most stall converters really dont act that way. Its sort of difficult to explain, but the dont actually feel like a slip. You described a textbook slip. Sounds like pressure bleedoff. Takes a second to build pressure. Possibly a poor pump also. Do you hear any odd noises? grinding, whirring, clunking?

Pull the dip stick and smell the tranny fluid. Is it red or black?

Drop a post over at transmissions and drivetrains.
