My Carburated 305 in my Firebird S/E does the same thing, try changing the fuel filter and doing a fuel system clean....should clear things right up
Sounds like fuel starvation.
I havent done this to my Firebird yet cause i don't know how to change the fuel filter (not on the fuel like most cars)

I have the same problem too sometimes when my car is hot. I am pretty sure I have a leaking injector if not a few because it doesn't fire right up when it is hot, it has to turn over a few extra times. I have 22 lb. injectors ready to go in but no extra $$$ for the tuning require to change the injectors.

Re: 305 tpi hesitates then takes off?
I had the same problem with my 91 V6 for a long time. I did a tune up, fuel filter, and just for fun, threw a MAP sensor on it to. One of the three things listed fixed it. I doubt it was the tune up. The fuel filter could have been somewhat plugged, so that could've been the cause. The other thing is the MAP Sensor. If the MAP isin't reading properly, it'll run the car rich, or lean, but usually rich, causing black smoke at low RPMs, and when you hammer on it initialy. Just some suggestions.

Don't overlook the simple stuff
. Fuel starvation will affect the WOT horsepower output first. (ie: going up a long hill with the gas pedal on the floor)
