How do you ID a 305HO out of the car?

How can I tell if I have a 305 HO motor. I was told the engine was a GM replacement 305HO crate motor.

The heads are 601's and have little circle tags epoxy glued on to them that say "Genuine GM Warranty Void if Removed"

The block casting number is 14010201

I was told the engine came out of a 95 Monte SS. The car was he shop were I got the motor, the motor was still on the hoist.

When I checked the block on More tech it doesn't have any notes about being and HO motor.

How do I know for Sure?

The only difference between an LG4 and L69 longblock ('85-up) is the cam. '82-'84 LG4's had dished pistons.

I assume you meant '85 Monte.

3rd gens didn't come with 601's, I can't say about Montes, though.

Put in a "known" cam, like a more modern aftermarket grind, and the whole thing will be moot.

Unless this "GM replacement 305HO crate motor" has dished pistons - a distinct possibility.

Thanks five 7

It is supposed to be a factory replacement 305HO.

I wanted to a way to find out if it has the higher compression ratio pistons without taking the heads off.

Grab a flashlight and peer into the spark plug holes. Rotate the motor if necessary to see the tops of the pistons. You can see enough of the piston to tell if they are dished or not.

If it was a HO it would have a knock sensor. The early LG-4 till about 86-87 didn't have one. The HO always had a higher output alternator and you can tell by the alternators belt width its a little wider then the rest.

It has the knock sensor.
No accy's or pulleys so I cant tell by that
I am gonna see if I can see enough of the piston trough the spark plug hole too.

The car would have the knock sensor, not the replacement engine. That doesn't tell you anything.
