Retrofit

I been reading up some Retrofit cams for non roller engines.
since i got a non roller block that i have in the garage.
i found afew topics about this anthey say you need to go a thicker Timing chain cover, also some say you need to get a retro roller camshaft. others say you can just use a roller cam but you got to get the retrofit rollers. and others say you need to get a machine shop to machine the cam bores to fit a roller cam. iv read so many mixed answers that
im confuzzled. may someone explain these 2 answers?

DO I NEED TO BORE OUT CAMSHAFT BORES TO FIT ROLLER CAM?
DO I HAVE TO GET A RETRO CAM OR CAN I JUST GET ANY ROLLER CAM?

or should i stay with Flat Tappet?
my engine im hoping to make over 500hp or so.
im not to sure how much a flat tappet can take.

Re: Retrofit

You DON'T need to machine the cam bores...all SBC cam bores are the same size. You DO NEED retro-roller lifters & cam. You also need a thrust button & wear plate, and a thicker timing chain cover, or one with a recessed area where the cam button would sit.

Re: Retrofit

A wear plate goes between the block and the timing chain. What happens on a roller cam is they move back and forth in the block. The thrust button basically keeps the cam from moving too far forward and also keeps from wearing a hole in the cover. The wear plate keeps the timing chain from rubbing against the block.

If this is not going to be a daily driver and you want to make 500 hp, you should look into a solid roller.
